With a fetal heart rate Doppler, you’ll be able to not only detect heart rates of both the mom and puppies and confirm pregnancy or whelping but also get a good idea of how many puppies are in the litter. At Veterinary Perinatal Specialty, we carry the DD-770 Fetal Doppler from Newman Medical. We’ve tried them all, and this one is the best. It features a new, extended depth probe which can find heart rates from 2 cm to 5 cm. In addition, it comes with a 3 MHz probe, or you can purchase an additional 5 MHz probe for very early fetal heart rate detection. Heart rates are detectable in most breeds of dogs at 35 days of gestation, with a fairly accurate litter count by 45 to 50 days. The 5 MHz probe can detect fetal heart rates at around 30 days post LH surge; however, it is harder to detect fetal heart rates after day 50 with this size probe.
